real naked food Opens in Chicago's Wicker Park Bringing with it the Greenest Grocer Concept in Chicago

CHICAGO, IL, April 23, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Being green and eating well just became even easier in Chicago. Last week, real naked food (realnakedfood.com) opened its doors at 1909 W. Division in Wicker Park, and it's already being cleaned out by customers hungry for a green grocer and a new, more eco-friendly shopping option - BYOC (Bring Your Own Container). real naked food's motto: "unpackaged, unprocessed, unmodified".

Modeled off of a store that owner Lauren Yucan came across in England, real naked food offers organic foods in bulk so customers can easily take just the amount they want. The store specializes in mostly unpackaged, organic, locally grown and eco-friendly foods and products for the home. The 2000-square foot facility includes a deli area with a juicer/healthy smoothie bar, wheat grass counter, a large healthy and vegan prepared foods section, robust local produce department, and bins of grocery and dry good items.

"real naked food is truly the freshest grocery store in Chicago complete with an organic garden out back," said Yucan. "I opened the store not only to bring a new concept to Chicagoans, but also to solve the problem of waste, especially of plastic bags and non-recyclable containers found even in some organic groceries. So we tell people to B.Y.O.C."

The problem she mentions is a big one. While some packaging can be recycled, most ends up in landfill sites. It's a grim picture.  According to the Illinois Commodity/Waste Generation and Characterization Study, grocery and merchandise bags accounted for 81,400 tons of waste in Illinois landfills.  While some packaging is necessary in our modern industrialized food system, unnecessary food packaging is a waste of resources.

Yucan's solution: Precycling is the practice of reducing waste by attempting to avoid bringing into the home or business items which will generate waste. real naked food allows Chicagoans the chance to reduce their ecological footprint created by food packaging and consumption.

At real naked food customers can precycle by:
Bringing containers into the store and for a 25 cent savings
Purchasing a reusable container at the store
Buying products in bulk
Buying locally grown products that travel less than 180 miles to our store

But it's not just about the food, products, containers and bags. Yucan practices what she preaches and was adamant that real naked food's design and interior were equally eco-conscious. She required that the fixtures, interiors and equipment be pre-used, made from reclaimed wood or created by local craftsman and artisans, down to the name tags and aprons. They recycle or donate most of the waste produced by the store, and even compost.

"I look at the future of the world for my son and I want it to be better than it is today," said Yucan.  "real naked food is one of many steps in the right direction."

real naked food will celebrate with a grand opening event on Earth Day from 6:00-9:00 p.m. with food and cooking demonstrations, music and more. RSVP required, info@realnakedfood.com. Space limited.
